We were fortunate enough to be able to attend this years 2009 Autism surf camp with Surfers Healing.  We traveled 12 hours to Wrightsville Beach North Carolina with a packed out van, 2 kids, and Sasha obsessing over drive thru restaurants the whole way, it was great! We arrived in Wrightsville around 5pm on a Wednesday and settled in.  We went to dinner with some of the crew and was able to meet and greet before the big day.  Everyone was so nice and humbling.  The surfers that were part of the camp this year were so excited to be able to experience the camp and see the childrens reactions to surfing.  There was no judgement and everyone was open arms.  We were all there for the same resason and it was wonderful.

The morning of the camp it was pouring down rain.  Hundreds of children running around the beach and their families waiting to see if the weather was going to turn.  By noon the sun came out and the kids started their rounds.  It was so amazing seeing every one of the children help their surf instructor paddle out into the ocean and stand up to surf when they were able to catch a wave.  Sasha had a little anxiety because he did not want to go into the ocean without me but a volunteer held all 65 lbs of him for at least 20 minutes and talked with Sasha, he was super excited to go at that point.  I was so proud watching him interact with the instructors, follow directions, take turns, be patient, and be brave.  The ocean was very calming to him and I will never forget the joy on his face watching so proudly.
